Monthly Mini-Bytes - February 2024

It's Okay to Update to macOS Sonoma

I've been getting this question a lot, so I wanted to open this month's Mini-Bytes with this: It's totally okay to update to macOS Sonoma. The update is stable, and it looks and feels much like Ventura with a couple of features that no one really cares about.

BUT FIRST, make sure you have a backup of your computer before you begin. If things will go badly with a sick computer or user account, it usually happens during big system updates. If you do not have a backup, get one before you start.

Also, verify that your software will work in macOS Sonoma. Old versions of Quicken, QuickBooks, Adobe, and others are notorious for not working after an update. Check and double-check this one.

Leave Your Computer On

Should you shut down your machine at night? No, you should not. Macs are designed to stay on, and as you sleep, your computer will do a bunch of maintenance and cleaning so that it will work better. It will also continue to backup, and if you have automatic updates, they should run overnight, too.

If you have a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, be sure to connect it to power and leave the lid open. If you close the lid it will go to sleep and not do updates, maintenance, or backups. Leave the lid open, plug your backup drive in, and plug the MacBook Air/Pro into power and let it do its thing.

If you go away on a trip, then that is the time to shut the machine down. But for everyday use, it is okay to keep it running.

New iPads are On the Way

Apple is rumored to announce new iPads in March that will include OLED screens in larger sizes. This is supposed to include a larger iPad Air close to 13-inches, like the larger iPad Pro. If that's true, it will sell like hotcakes.
